What’s New at The Community Outreach

Gary Helder, Executive Director

My first three months with the ministry are over and I am amazed at how much I have learned and concerned with how much I realize I do not yet know. While this ministry is small in the number of staff … it is quite large in heart, in the number of people who partner in by giving and volunteering, and the number of people we serve.

In addition to the everyday crucial role of assisting people in need and sharing His love, some very visible things have happened since our last newsletter:

  • We are settled into our new digs … Suite 225 of The Sioux Falls Ministry Center at 225 E 11th St. We are so thankful for the generous gift of the donors who made the dream of a ‘ministry mall’ a reality. To be able to care for His people in such a beautiful and functional location is a true blessing … and to do so with nearly $4000 less annual expenses is the ‘frosting on the cake’. Please stop down and visit us and get a tour of The Sioux Falls Ministry Center and learn about the 8 other ministries it houses.

  • Our entire staff participated in Leadercast 2011 at the invitation of Pastor Jeff Herron and the Linwood Wesleyan congregation. It was great to utilize the telecasts of some incredible leaders to re-energize our staff, provide new perspectives, and position us for a series of personal and team development activities we are engaged in.

  • Jackie Jockheck resigned her position on the Board. Jackie really made an impact on our Communications Committee and on last falls’ Experience This! online auction. Thank you Jackie for your service!

  • Korena Keys stepped up from her role as a member of our Communications Committee to be appointed as a Director to fill Jackie’s position. Korena’s love for the Lord and her desire to serve is so vibrant … and we are very thankful to have her in leadership!

  • We were in the news! In case you missed it, go online at the Argus Leader to read the “On the move” column on June 13th. Korena Keys and The Community Outreach were featured … and Korena did a marvelous job of sharing our ministry’s role and goals. I am confident many will be moved to consider their ability to serve because she shared her vision and experience.

  • We held a Board/Staff retreat to examine our core values, our mission, our vision, and to establish a stragegic plan for the next few years.

    • Many of you were contacted by Sumption & Wyland to provide your insights … and as stakeholders in this ministry they were critically important to us. Margaret Sumption reviewed your feedback with us … lead us through several thought provoking excercises … and is now supporting us as we firm up our plans.

    • In the weeks ahead, we will be sharing our initial thoughts with many of you to make sure we are on the right track. Thank you in advance for your open and thoughtful feedback!

    • By the time of our fall newsletter, we should be able to share our results with everyone … and will be well on our way to improving the operation of this ministry.

And on a personal note, thank you to each of you who I have met with over the past three months. You have generously shared your time and your thoughts. Because of your sacrifice, I feel better grounded about the long history of this ministry … and your hopes for our future. I am in a much better position to protect the critical elements you identified that have served us well in the past and will serve us well in the future … while being more confident about areas where changes can be made. Thank you all!
