STAND IN THE GAPS

ABOUT

The Community Outreach is an ecumenical, non-profit ministry serving the Sioux Falls area for over 40 years. This ministry was founded by local leaders of the church who saw a need to supplement government welfare programs.  We assist families who are struggling financially in Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties.

We strive to fill some gaps in the public welfare system while personally relating to and caring for each person who comes to us. Churches, the Sioux Empire United Way, businesses, and individuals partner with us to provide financial assistance, primarily housing, utilities, and work-related transportation, for those in crisis. We also provide information and referrals to address needs outside our core service areas.

With 1 out of 10 residents in the Sioux Empire at or below the poverty line, chances are you or someone you know is looking to break the cycle of poverty. Many people live above the poverty line but experience financial stress due to unexpected life changes, such as unemployment, medical emergencies, and other overwhelming events.

We serve in three main areas:

  1. Financial assistance for rent, utilities, and work-related transportation. Read how we keep families together in safe, affordable housing through Crisis Care.

  2. Financial education and mentoring. Learn how adults are achieving self-sufficiency through our Genesis Mentoring Program.

  3. Information and referral to other social service agencies.

We partner with local churches to provide financial and spiritual assistance to those they know in need. See how these partnerships are at work here in the Sioux Empire!
